Manual Therapy
The therapists at SSPT are uniquely trained as manual physical therapists. Manual therapists incorporate hands-on techniques in the evaluation and treatment of soft tissue injuries and joint problems to help reduce pain, decrease inflammation, and increase flexibility with the goal of restoring motion to a part of the body.
Your physical therapist may use a variety of manual therapy techniques during your treatment. These techniques include the following:
- Muscle energy techniques involve the patient contracting his muscles against a gentle and controlled force that is being applied by the physical therapist. This technique is used to help mobilize a restricted joint and strengthen weak muscles.
- Myofascial release technique is a form of soft tissue therapy that involves the therapist applying gentle sustained pressure into myofascial connective restrictions. This technique is used to help to alleviate pain and increase motion by releasing the constriction in the fascia.
- Mobilization techniques are used when a joint has restricted mobility. These techniques are applied to help restore normal function in the joint and surrounding tissues. These techniques typically involve the therapist using his or her hands to move the joints. Learn more
- Manipulation is a mobilization technique that may be used when someone is experiencing an acute episode of facet locking. The purpose of this technique is to “free-up” the joint and restore normal function. Manipulation of a spinal joint is sometimes referred to as an “adjustment."Learn more
